Generally, each of the 49 councillors is elected for a four-year term. They decide how the District Council should carry out its many functions. Because of the postponement of the elections for 17 seats originally scheduled for May 2020, those elected in May 2021 will serve for three years.

The current political balance of the Council is:

  • Conservative 28
  • Liberal Democrats 10
  • Labour/Labour and Co-operative 8
  • Independent 2
  • Green Party 1

The five Labour and three Labour and Co-operative Party councillors together form the Labour and Co-operative Party Group on the Council.
